Zumba® has changed me! I am 45 years old and in the best shape of my life. When I began taking Zumba® classes 3 ½ years ago, I was much heavier—30 pounds heavier. When I chose to make it a regular part of my fitness routine, the weight poured off —not only that, I smile and enjoy myself during my workouts like never before. I am happier, healthier and stronger than ever! I have been engaged in fitness, and fitness classes my entire adult life. As a young adult I was a fan of STEP aerobics, dance aerobics, swimming, circuit training, and weight lifting. Soon discovering that being part of a class was in fact my favorite form of exercise, I sought out more and more group settings, eventually stumbling onto the Zumba® train—and it has been the ride of my life so far! I finally found my ‘thing’!
The incredible people in my class really make Zumba® work for me, as well as the AMAZING music! At the end of an exhausting work day, sometimes I feel like there is no way I will be able to muster up the strength to lead my class. Then, like magic, I hear the music, and see the smiling faces behind me, and my entire attitude flips around. In fact, I can’t resist the need to shake my booty. WHAT A BLESSING!! I know that I will grow old with Zumba® filling a huge part of my life!
A teacher by nature with the desire to learn and share knowledge–it’s who I am. I am originally from the East Coast and moved out to California right after I graduated from college. My mom lovingly supported my choice, believing I would only be out here for 2 or 3 years. Twenty-three years later, I truly consider myself a Californian.
Many jobs (and gyms) have crossed my path, however my greatest accomplishments are my roles as Wife and Mother. My husband and I have been together over half of our lives. We met and fell instantly in love twenty-two years ago and both celebrated our 44th birthday last year (2012). Our super cool daughter is the love of our life and just turned ten this summer (2013). She has granted me the prestigious and esteemed title of Zumba Queen! My family supports and encourages my Zumba® escapades, providing me with the time to practice, take classes, and teach.
In 1990, Paul and I started our career as Outdoor Educators at CYO CAMP in Occidental. This camp is part of the San Francisco Archdiocese and serves thousands of Bay Area children and families. I started as a Teacher Naturalist, taking kids on an environmental journey of a lifetime and worked my way up the ladder over 15 years, eventually running the entire program side by side with my husband. During this time, in 2005, I began a Graduate Program at USF School of Education and acquired a Teaching Credential and a Masters in Teaching (I was 9 months pregnant when I walked in graduation and had my daughter 2 days later). High school, middle school, preschool…you name it and I’ve taught it! My dream is to teach at college level someday…AND have my own Zumba® studio. —Thoughts become reality!
